Pet Corner - Portugal Resident(Hairloss News)

Scott is the resident vet on the UK's ITV1 This Morning programme, author of the recently published Puppy Parenting and is a partner in the Algarve's newest veterinary practice, VIP Veterinary Surgery, in Lagos. Contact to carpets, and the dust mites that lurk there, is a common cause of abdominal hair loss in indoor cats, with the warmer weather causing the mites to breed and rapidly increase in numbers. The 'tinge of orange' you mention intrigues me - if this is a hair colour change it could be saliva staining the coat due to over grooming, though it could also be harvest mite. Harvest mite can cause considerable discomfort in cats and dogs with the larval stage feeding on our pets' skin before dropping to the ground to complete its life cycle. The hair loss could be a result of over grooming, as the mite injects a fluid into the skin which liquefies cells which is very irritating to the cat, although usually more irritating than you describe. Keeping the dogs on leads and using halti (head collars which apply just the slightest pressure over the bridge of the nose to halt pulling) collars to ensure you have good control of them, use treats in each of your respective pockets to keep each dogs' focus on their owners and not each other. read more
